Foster Grandparent Program Holds Its Annual Volunteer Recognition Banquet

On Friday, June 12th, 2009, the Foster Grandparent Program held its annual Volunteer Recognition Banquet. One hundred and thirty guests came together at the Century House in Acushnet to celebrate another successful and rewarding year that included 70 volunteers, 28 sites and 27 years of sponsorship by Coastline Elderly Services, Inc. The theme of the day was, “We lift our hats off to you, Foster Grandparent volunteers

In the true spirit of fun, many of the guests donned their favorite hat. Several volunteers were lucky enough to wear a hat made by their students. Children from North Star Learning Center in New Bedford made special hats for their five classroom Foster Grandparents.

The award of 15 years of volunteer service was given to Eugenia Pimentel, North Star Learning Center , New Bedford . The award for 10 years of volunteer service was shared with Alice DeCruz, Holy Family Holy Name School of New Bedford, Carrie Gonsalves, PACE Head Start of New Bedford, Malvina Martin, Kiddie Kampus of Dartmouth and Vivian Paiva, Early Learning Center of New Bedford. During the banquet celebration guests learned that over the course of the past year these 70 senior volunteers whose ages ranged from 60 - 94 years old had served 1800 children from Dartmouth to Plymouth and donated over 66,816 volunteer service hours.

Twenty-eight sites were also recognized for their support of the Foster Grandparent Program. The sites ranged from elementary schools, after school programs, special need centers, health and rehab centers, child development centers, Head Start facilities and St. Luke's Hospital. Several of the sites have been supporting the program for more than 25 years.

Guests were encouraged to share the success stories of the Foster Grandparent program with other members of their community, as recruitment for more senior volunteers is an on going activity. There are many more students who would benefit from one on one tutoring/mentoring with a Foster Grandparent volunteer.
