Coastline's Charles Sisson Elected as President of the National Association of Area Agencies on Aging
By Abrah J. Salk
On Saturday August 5, 2006, Charles N. Sisson, Executive Director of Coastline Elderly Services, Inc. was officially bestowed the honor of President of the National Association of Area Agencies on Aging, or N4A.
The National Association of Area Agencies on Aging is the umbrella organization for the 655 area agencies on aging (AAAs) and more than 230 Title VI Native American aging programs in the U.S. Through its presence in Washington , D.C. , N4A advocates on behalf of the local aging agencies to ensure that needed resources and support services are available to older Americans.
Charles Sisson, who will continue into his 27 th year at Coastline Elderly Services, Inc, will also hold the office of N4A President for two years.
He served 8 years on the N4A board of directors in such positions as treasurer, 2 nd Vice President and 1 st Vice President. He was elected in a national election of the membership held in June for the position of president.
During his term, Mr. Sisson plans to work towards reauthorization of the Old Americans Act - the Federal law that funds many national programs including the Elderly Nutrition Program and Title III B programs.
Other goals include an expansion of the Meals on Wheels program, more support for caregivers and more choices of where elders can receive the services they need to remain in the community. He also plans to continue senior advocacy including helping work towards getting the Elder Justice Act approved. This would make it a federal crime to abuse an elder.
Mr. Sisson's election to this position will positively affect Coastline Elderly Services, Inc. It will bring national recognition to Coastline and allow our Board of Directors and Advisory Board direct input on policies that affect New Bedford and the surrounding local areas. Statewide issues will be addressed as Massachusetts continues to be a leader in elder advocacy and affairs.
When asked about his goals, Charles Sisson says with great conviction and pride, “I will be an N4A president that advocates for the rural, suburban and urban areas of our nation. No area of the country can be ignored; it's my goal to serve the older adult population and provide them with as many long term care choices as possible.”
